Common Questions

Do I need HVAC experience to own a Dalton Heating & Air franchise?

No. You don’t need to be a technician to own the business. What you need is the ability to run a disciplined operation: manage people, follow a system, and care about showing up when you said you would. We’ll train you on the HVAC side, the pricing structure, and The Garrison Standard. Many of our owners come from completely different industries. Marco Benitez, our Owner and Lead Technician, didn’t start out knowing every capacitor by heart either. He learned the trade by doing it, and he’ll tell you the same: the technical knowledge can be taught. The discipline either comes naturally or you work at it until it does.

How much does a Dalton Heating & Air franchise cost?

The total investment range depends on your market size, whether you’re starting fresh or converting an existing shop, and what equipment you already own. Most prospective owners should plan for a total investment between $150,000 and $350,000. That includes your franchise fee, initial inventory, a service vehicle or two, tools, training, and working capital to get through the first months. We don’t hide costs in fine print. When you talk with our team, you’ll get a written breakdown of every line item before you commit to anything. That’s the same standard we hold our franchisees to with their own customers: price in writing before any work starts.

Is financing available for the franchise fee or startup costs?

We don’t provide direct financing, but we’ll point you toward lenders who understand franchise startups and have worked with our model before. Many owners combine SBA-backed loans with personal capital, and some qualify for equipment leasing programs on trucks and tools. The honest answer is that you’ll need some cash of your own in the game. The exact amount depends on the lender and your financial position. When you reach out, we’ll walk you through what previous owners have done and what’s realistic for your situation.

Will I have a protected territory?

Yes. Every Dalton Heating & Air owner receives a defined service territory based on population, drive times, and realistic workload capacity for a single shop. We don’t overlap territories, and we don’t sell the same zip codes to two different owners. Your territory is yours to build. The size gets determined during the application process, once we understand your market and your goals. Think of it this way: a tight territory you can actually serve well beats a sprawling one where you’re late to every call. The Garrison Code starts with showing up inside the window you gave.

How long is the initial training?

Plan for three weeks of initial training before you open your doors. The first two weeks cover the operational side: pricing structure, dispatching, the written guarantee, customer service standards, and how to run a service call from first ring to final invoice. The third week gets technical, where you’ll learn how to speak the language of HVAC so you can support your technicians and talk to customers without sounding lost. After opening, you’re not on your own. Ongoing training happens regularly, and you’ll have direct access to the Garrison Partners team when questions come up.

What ongoing fees and royalties does Dalton Heating & Air charge?

We charge a royalty based on a percentage of your gross revenue, plus a contribution toward the brand’s national marketing. The exact percentages are disclosed in our Franchise Disclosure Document, which you’ll receive early in the process. What you get for those fees matters: the 365-Day Done Right Promise infrastructure, lead support, training updates, and the systems that keep your shop running tight. We’d rather you understand the math fully than sign something you haven’t read. Ask us anything about it. A good franchise relationship starts with both sides seeing the same numbers.

How long does it take from signing to opening day?

Most owners open their doors within three to six months of signing. That timeline covers territory finalization, securing a location, vehicle wraps and branding, hiring your first technician, completing training, and getting your licenses and permits in order. Some markets move faster, especially if you’re converting an existing HVAC business. Some move slower if commercial real estate is tight in your area. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during the application process, not a best-case scenario that falls apart by week two.

What kind of support do franchisees get after opening?

You get a direct line to the Garrison Partners support team, ongoing training, and help with the parts of running a business that trip up new owners. That includes marketing guidance, call-handling standards, hiring help, and pricing updates as material and equipment costs shift. You also get the brand’s written guarantee infrastructure, which is a real selling tool with homeowners who’ve been burned by no-shows and moving prices. But you’re still the owner. You make the calls for your shop. We provide the system and the support. You run the business in your community.

What makes someone a good fit for a Dalton Heating & Air franchise?

The ideal candidate is someone who gets genuinely bothered when a job is done sloppy, when a customer’s time is wasted, or when a promise gets broken. That’s the core of it. You don’t need to be the loudest person in the room or a natural salesperson. You need to care about doing things right the first time and have the backbone to hold your team to that standard. If you’ve hired people before, managed a budget, or run any kind of operation where reliability mattered, you’re already ahead. If you’ve ever been the homeowner waiting on a no-show technician and swore you’d never run a business like that, you might be exactly who we’re looking for.
