York Heat Pump Installation in Los Angeles: What to Know First
York heat pump installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $8,850 depending on tonnage, efficiency tier, and whether your existing ductwork and electrical can carry the new system. Most installations we schedule are completed in one full day, occasionally two when we’re reworking duct connections or upgrading the breaker panel. We’re an independent York service provider, not a factory-authorized dealer, which means we don’t push one brand’s upsell ladder. We give you a written price before any work starts, and we stand behind the job for a full year.
This page is for Los Angeles homeowners who already know York equipment and want straight answers on installation: what it costs, what actually fails on these units, and who’s showing up at your door. Call (361) 306-9515 for a free estimate. Marco Benitez answers questions directly.
How York Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- York Affinity series: reversing valve sticking in mild weather. Los Angeles winters put heat pumps in a strange cycle. The system heats at night, cools by afternoon, and the reversing valve, the part that flips refrigerant direction between heating and cooling, gets worked harder here than in places with a real heating season. On Affinity units we see the valve hang halfway, which makes the compressor run hot and the house never quite reach setpoint. The fix is a full diagnostic voltage check at the valve coil first, not a blind part swap. We replace the valve and the solenoid together, because replacing just the solenoid on a York Affinity leaves the underlying mechanical wear untouched.
- York LX series: defrost sensor corrosion near the coast. Homes within a few miles of the marine layer, Santa Monica, Playa del Rey, San Pedro, get salt air that eats the defrost sensor terminals on LX outdoor units. When that sensor fails, the unit goes into defrost too often or not at all, and ice builds on the coil even when it’s 55 degrees out. We use sealed terminal connectors on any LX defrost repair within the coastal zone. It costs a few dollars more in materials and saves you a second service call in 18 months.
- York YXV variable-speed: communication error codes after a power surge. The YXV line talks to the indoor air handler through a proprietary communication wire. After the kind of brownout events that roll through neighborhoods like Van Nuys and North Hollywood during peak summer load, the boards lose their pairing and the thermostat throws a fault. It looks like a major failure. Half the time it’s a reprogramming sequence and a firmware re-link, not a new board. We verify before quoting parts, because the distinction is $300 versus $1,100. A factory-trained tech will know this. A generalist will sell you the board.
- York HMH7 side-discharge: undersized breakers on older homes. This is a Los Angeles housing-stock reality. Homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, which is a huge share of the San Fernando Valley and West Adams, often have 30-amp breakers feeding the original AC circuit. The York HMH7 has a locked rotor amp draw that can trip an aging 30-amp breaker on startup. Code requires we assess the circuit’s ampacity before we land the wires. Sometimes the fix is a breaker and conductor upgrade; sometimes the existing wire is oversized and the breaker just needs replacing. We don’t skip this step.
- York outdoor units with factory reversing valves: compressor flooding from short-cycling. Short-cycling, when the system turns on and off too rapidly, sends liquid refrigerant back to the compressor instead of vapor. Over time this washes the oil out of the compressor bearings. On York heat pumps we see this most often in homes where the previous contractor oversized the unit or where the thermostat is placed in direct afternoon sun. Our installation includes verifying the existing thermostat location and replacing or relocating it if it’s causing short-cycling. You can’t fix that with a part. You fix it at installation.
Our York Heat Pump Installation Process
- 1
Call and system intake. You call (361) 306-9515. We ask what your current system is doing, what the house feels like, and what’s on the wall now. Marco Benitez will tell you what to look for before we even schedule, just from that phone call.
- 2
Site visit and load calculation. We come out, walk the house, measure the duct runs, check the electrical panel, and run a Manual J load calculation. That’s the math that sizes equipment to your actual house, not to what the last guy installed. Los Angeles houses in Mid-City and Eagle Rock have wildly different heat gain profiles depending on shade, window orientation, and insulation, and the Manual J captures that.
- 3
Written proposal with exact York equipment. The price goes in writing before any work starts. No range that drifts upward. We specify the exact York outdoor unit, indoor air handler or coil, thermostat, and any electrical or duct modifications. You see the parts breakdown.
- 4
Install day. We arrive in the stated window, in uniform, background-checked. Old equipment comes out. New York unit goes in. We pull a proper vacuum on the refrigerant lines, which on a York system is non-negotiable because moisture in the lines destroys the compressor. Duct connections get sealed. The site gets cleaned.
- 5
Commissioning and test. We run the system through heating and cooling cycles, check refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling numbers against York’s published specs, and verify airflow. You get a completed commissioning report, not a verbal “it’s working.”
- 6
Guarantee in writing. Every installation and repair from Dalton Heating & Air carries a written guarantee for a full year. If anything fails in that window, we come back at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and we’ve held to it since 2003.

Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Dalton Heating & Air for York Work
We’re a Garrison Partners company, and we’ve operated under The Garrison Standard since 2003. That means written pricing before any work starts, on every job, without exception. Written guarantee on every repair and installation. If our work fails within a year, we return at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s not an upsell. It’s the same on a capacitor swap and a full York heat pump installation.
Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed. A live person answers the phone 24/7. You won’t hit a voicemail queue or wait for a callback. And because we service all nine major residential HVAC brands, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York, Daikin, Bryant, and American Standard, we’re not boxed into defending one manufacturer’s equipment. When a York unit is the right fit for your house, we install it. When it isn’t, we tell you that too.
FAQs
No. As an independent York service provider, we perform installations that preserve your factory warranty. What voids a York warranty is improper installation, unlicensed work, using non-compatible refrigerant, or failing to register the equipment within York’s stated window. We handle warranty registration for you after installation and document the entire job so the factory has what it needs if a compressor or coil claim comes up later.
Most York heat pump installations in Los Angeles take one full day. If we’re replacing the air handler, reworking duct connections, or upgrading the electrical service, plan for a second day. We’ll tell you before we start, and the timeline is in your written proposal.
If your York unit is more than 12 to 15 years old and the repair exceeds $1,500, replacement usually makes more sense, especially with Los Angeles electricity rates. We’ll show you the numbers on both paths and let you decide. We don’t push replacement when a $400 repair gives you three more good years. Call (361) 306-9515 and we’ll help you run the actual math on your unit.
Yes, for the parts that matter: boards, sensors, reversing valves, and defrost components we’re seeing fail most often on York equipment in Los Angeles. For parts we don’t stock, we source OEM or quality aftermarket equivalents. The difference matters. A factory reversing valve on a York Affinity is worth the wait; a generic capacitor works the same and saves you money. We’ll tell you which side of the line your part falls on.
Once you approve the written proposal, we typically schedule within 5 to 10 business days. Equipment availability on certain York lines varies, and we’ll give you a real date, not a vague window. Tell me what the system is doing and what the house feels like, that’s usually enough to know where to start. Call (361) 306-9515 and we’ll get you a quote and a date.
